With the Finnish “sisu” through the grey stone

Finland is an arctic country with abundant natural beauty populated with 5,5 million well-educated and innovative inhabitants, who have created numerous globally well-known and valued products and companies.

Finland has its challenges. This sparsely populated country has long distances between the cities. Arctic climate imposes heating, transport and infrastructure problems, especially for our energy intensive industry, to be solved. To live with these challenges requires toughness that we in Finland call “sisu”.

Finland possesses relatively rich natural resources and a high level of know-how and competencies. We have the brains and globally respected education system, forests and water, biomass and minerals that are needed to build a globally competitive country.

Based on our strengths and sparred by the existing challenges Finland has achieved the status of one of the leading countries in the world in the areas of sustainability, green economy, energy efficient production and transport system and ability to create innovative and sustainable solutions in many areas of human activity.

Towards a low-carbon society

In Finland the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption was over 39 % already in 2015 and will rise to over 50 % in 2020s. EU’s renewable energy target is 20 % by 2020.

The state of the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources constitutes the basis for human well-being now and in the future.
